Random Recommendations: Movies Vol 1
For the first article on Chopped Bits I figured I would submit the first of a series. This is the inaugural volume of "Random Recommendations". In "RR" I will submit 3 movies, songs, etc. that I feel it neccessary for others to enjoy. It was either this or a series of reviews, but I figured people may be tired of long drawn out reviews of random movies and stuff.
For the first "issue" of RR, I present "Movies Volume 1". Without more long winded introduction he
re are the recommendations:

1. Thir13een Ghosts (2001)

My third-favorite Ghost movie (Ghostbusters and it's sequel rank a tad higher, I am afraid).
Thir13teen takes a rather interesting turn and isn't your average "people staying in a haunted house" movie. It is fairly gorey at parts and has some really fun - and often likeable - actors. F. Murray Abraham and Tony Shaloub are the only real actors here with Shannon Elizabeth just looking pretty for most of the film (and doing a fine job).
Mathhew Lillard, while doing his usual Mathhew Lillard schtick,
added an interesting frailty to his performance that pulls it away from his teen-movie schlock.
It's often a very creepy off-putting film and has perhaps some of the best use of effects Horror movies have seen in some time. thir13een Ghosts does a fine job on the mood of the movie. It doesn't go for the artsy creepiness that the overblown The Others and the Owen Wilson bomb The Haunting and instead opts for a fairly adventuresome almost slasher feel to it's storytelling.

2. The Bad Seed (1956)

Before The Good Son and The Orphan there was Patty McCormack's chilling performance in The Bad Seed as a murderous child and her evil deeds. While I apologize for the Leonard Maltin-ness of that introduction, I maintain that this is not only an excellent horror film, but a flat out great movie.
I was lucky enoguh to stumble onto this while flipping past Turner Classic Movies one summer night. I managed to come in on one of Patty's scenes and felt an intense hatred for her character almost immediately and wanted to see her punished.
In the spirit of the film I won't say anything about it's "SHOCKING ENDING" other than I really didn't see it coming at all.
The movie is simple but it is because of that you get to enjoy it's evil creepiness. This is classic horror at it's low-key finest and if you aren't the kind of uncultured schmuck that only watches "color movies" I offer it to you for your viewing pleasure.

3. Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995)

Tales From The Crypt will always hold a special place in my heart. When I was very young (4 or 5 years old) my family used to watch it every week and would encourage me to stay regardless of the fact that the Cryptkeeper popping out of the coffin made me jump. every. single. time.
So when I first heard that the fine folks at TFTC were making a movi
e I was unsurprisingly ecstatic. For some reason I didn't see this movie in theaters and had the good fortune to rent it myself from the local video store. I am immensely glad I did.
The movie has some excellent creature effects and has a pretty decent setup (think Maximum Overdrive with zombies instead of Semi trucks with Green Goblin on the front and slightly less ACDC) and an amazing performance by Billy Zane in his creepy over-the-top form that everyone knows and loves.
The movie is stupidly gorey at times and features The Sandman and Roger Rabbit viciously dismembered by demons. Yes, that is my reasoning for recommending this movie to you.

Well, it was a small article, but then again these aren't meant to be novels. I will try and do something else for the next one and then return with an RR for a different medium, perhaps Comic books? Until then, feel free to leave any comments and look for the other writers to join up pretty soon and offer their own articles.
NOTE: I managed to recommend three horror movies that feature neither a Zombie nor Slasher. I guess that means a top ten list in each category is in order?

Chopped Bits Opening Soon
Once everyone is added to the site and has at least an idea of what or when they are going to write their first article I will add this to the site. Until then, all you get is a neat placeholder of a design.

Horror is ingrained in Nick's history. As early as he can remember he was reading his grandfather's Weird War Tales comics and often sat sat as a child with the family watching Tales From The Crypt. A tome of useless horror knowledge, Nick has a strong interest in movies, comic books and music within the realm of terror.
